Good Movies, Bad Movies

Hello World!

Pretty much everyone has watched that really sucky movie that was a total waste of your time. Everyone has watched that movie that was absolutely AMAZING and you’ve watched it over ten times. I’m going to name some movies that made me leap around the room they were so incredible, and some movies that were a major ‘meh’.

  1. Highlander. Highlander is about these special people who are immortal. An immortal person can only be killed by another immortal person. They try to kill each other, and try to be the last immortal. If you are the last immortal, then you get a grand prize. The movie focuses on one everlasting guy. My Dad was an 80’s dude, and still is. We only listen to 80’s music in the car, and he is always showing us movies that he watched from that era. My Dad was so excited to show us Highlander, and he told the story when he was a kid, his sister showed him this movie, and he freaked out and watched it over and over again. I had my hopes up, and I knew that Highlander was going to be boss. But it wasn’t. It sucked. If you’ve seen Highlander, loved it, and you’re yelling at your screen in anger right now while reading this, I’m sorry you’re upset. But when the movie was over, I said, “That’s it? That was boring.” I do not recommend this movie, but if you want to use the precious time you have on planet earth to see it, do whatever the heck you want.

2. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Okay, if you got the impression that I don’t like 80’s stuff, you’re wrong. The 80’s are great. Just not Highlander. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was just plain awesome. It’s what it sounds like. It’s about Robin Hood. He is a criminal, but escapes from this place where they cut your hands off(the movie takes place in medieval times, so that explains it all). He finds these forest people and they fight, but Robin eventually joins them. The Sheriff of Nottingham hates Robin for a reason I forget(I haven’t watched the movie since forever, and our copy of it is caput). The Sheriff captured some of the forest people and is about to hang them, and there’s this big, epicly awesome battle, plot twists, a little romance, basically everything you’d want in an action/adventure movie. I’d totally recommend this movie, and you should go watch it because it leaves you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Plus Alan Rickman is in it. (R.I.P.)

3. Sing. Now I know what you’re thinking. Most people thought Sing was a fantastic movie! I did too! But it wasn’t. In my opinion. If you’ve forgotten what Sing is, or just haven’t seen it yet, let me sum it up for you. It’s an animation about an animal city, and a koala who owns a theatre that has had really bad reviews and shows. So he decides to have a singing talent show with a grand prize to bring a more positive vibe to the theatre. He chooses a bunch of different animals, runs through a few problems, and does the talent show. Sounds like a fairly decent movie, right? Well, I thought there were too many issues in the plot. When it seemed like the movie was over, a new problem came up, and another half an hour went by as the characters tried to solve it. The big plot idea had problems, and each character themselves had their own problems. Some parts of the movie were alright. There were funny moments, but all in all it was a bad movie for me. I personally wouldn’t recommend this movie, but like I said before, if you want to use the precious time you have left on earth watching this movie, go for it, but don’t say I didn’t warn you…

4. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Back to the 80’s. More like way back in time for the characters in this movie. It’s about these two teenagers, Bill and Ted, who are totally into Van Halen. They want to be musicians just like him. They do really bad in school. There’s a history project that they have to get done, and get a good grade on, and if they don’t get a good grade, Ted’s dad is going to send Ted away to military school. A magical telephone box pops up, and it can send them anywhere in time. To the future, or to the past. This movie is totally excellent, laugh out loud, and fascinating all at the same time. I’d recommend it more than any other movies in this post. All I can say is, ‘Party on, dudes!’

Where I Live

Hello World!

Canada is a very diverse country! We have mountains, rivers, forests, fields, arctic, the list could go on forever! I am very grateful to live in Canada, but I truly wouldn’t want to live in any other town in this country than the incredible Comox Valley.

The Comox Valley is located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. My city has three main ‘towns’. The Village of Cumberland, The City of Courtenay, and the Town of Comox. There’s also smaller cities that branch off of Cumberland and Courtenay, like Fanny Bay, Union Bay, Royston, Black Creek and Merville. All of these places make up the Comox Valley! We’re about the fifth largest city on the island.

If you and your family were ever to come visit the Comox Valley (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), here are a few of my favourite places you should check out:

The track! If you’ve read some of my other posts, you’d know that I love track and field. My family has been involved in track for a very long time, so I’ve been hanging out there since I was about two or three! Our track is not exactly in the best shape. The equipment shed is super small and has a leak in the roof(once there was even a person sleeping outside on top of the shed), and the long jump board is splintered and has a pit of water underneath it, so when you jump on it water squirts out. Our bleachers are really old, and once someone tried to burn them down. Our hammer cage it rusty and bent awkwardly(hopefully from my amazing throwing that went wrong and flew into the fence). But I think all those things make the Comox Valley track, our track.

The beach at Seal Bay, from the Seal Bay Nature Park site.

Seal Bay Park is an amazing place to go for a walk. Some of the trails are open to horseback riding and biking, too. The forest spreads out to different places, so you can find trails all over the valley that are with Seal Bay Park. One of the trails leads down to a really stunning beach! Most of the trails are loops, and you can take hikes for different lengths. My Mom and I love to go running and walking there. Once we even saw an owl perching in a tree!

Miracle Beach, from the Miracle Beach site.

Camping at Miracle Beach is one of my favourite things to do in the summer. We usually go with our cousins, so it’s even more fun. Camping is always really exciting because you get to leave your house, sleep outside in a tent, roast marshmallows, and play games! Miracle Beach is especially fantastic since there’s a beautiful beach just a short walk away, where you could play in the water and sand all day. Each of the campgrounds has a fire pit and a picnic table, and there’s also a really great playground near the toilets (okay, the location isn’t ‘really great’). There’s also a small nature house, which is basically a museum for nature! I have so many wonderful memories from there, like when a squirrel took one of our Doritos and faked its own death, when we created the ultimate s’mores combo, or when my cousin and I freaked out and swam away as fast as we could from a red jellyfish. Miracle Beach is basically all fun in my mind, and I’d definitely be there all summer if I could!

Thanks for reading this post! The Comox Valley has tons more places that I love, but I had to go with these three. Do you have places similar to my list in your town? What are some of your favourite places to be?

Happy blogging!

Throw, Throw, Throw!

Hi everyone!

I bet lots of you have heard, or even tried some of the events in track and field, or athletics. Every year at my school, grades four to seven go to the local track and have a whole day of track and field fun, with friendly competition against two other schools.

I’m  part of the real track club, which isn’t part of school, and my Dad is the president of the club! My Dad is one of the top javelin throwers for his age in the world, and his all time personal best is 72.72. (seventy two meters, seventy two centimeters)

He is fifty years old, and this past track season broke the Canadian record for his age group. He competes in all the throws, and I’m nagging on him to try a 100 meter or a 200 meter sprint this up coming season.

As for me, javelin isn’t my best. My best is about 17 meters. But I’m getting better! But right now I’m focusing more on another throwing skill. Hammer! This past summer I went to a junior development (JD) championship on the mainland, and I threw a huge personal best (PB) in hammer, and got a first place medal, so I was ‘provincial champion’ in hammer!

I threw 23 meters, as a standing throw, and if you read my post about Anita Wlodarczyk, at the top of the post there’s a video that has a link to youtube where you can watch her world record throw. In the video, when Anita throws, she turns. I just stood, swung it around, and let go. It looks a lot more impressive when she does it.

I’m working on my turns, and my goal for hammer is to keep pace with my older sister. She is 14 right now. She threw 31 meters in hammer this past track season. Next season she’ll be fifteen. I am twelve right now. Next track season I’ll be 13. So If she threw 31 meters when she was fourteen, then I need to throw over that mark when I’m 13.

Basically my whole family throws! My Mom used to do track, and she did sprints and javelin, you now know my sister, my Dad, and I all throw, and my grandma throws in all the events and she’s eighty!

Here are all the throwing events:

Discus, like throwing a heavy metal dinner plate, where it rolls off you fingers and flies into the air.

Shot put, like a cannonball that you push out into the air.

Javelin, like throwing sticks really far.

Plus hammer, like a shot put on the end of a wire with a handle that you swing around your head and release.

Have you tried track and field before? What’s your favourite event?

Thanks for reading!

Volleyball

2016 WVB NYC | UofA vs UofC

Sangudo via Compfight

Hi everyone!

Today I’m going to tell you about volleyball! I’m on the girls team this year, and we recently had our first game! We played three different schools, and hosted the games at my school. I like volleyball because it’s a sport that challenges you, but is also really fun. My team is really supportive of everyone.

I usually like solo sports. I do track and field, and I like it because you’re always competing with yourself, and trying to get your own personal best. Volleyball is a team sport, but in a way, follows the same sort of thing. Everyone on the team has their own personal techniques, and everyone has different skill levels than others. So you set your own goals to be your best and help the team improve. But really, the whole team is helping each other improve. You have to work together.

Volleyball is a really fun sport, and if you haven’t played before, you should try it out! It’s a great sport to work hard and have fun with your friends. If you don’t do too many sports, this might be the thing for you!

Do you like volleyball? Are you on a team?

Happy blogging!

Halloween

Autumn Color Pumpkins im Whole Foods Market

Marco Verch via Compfight

Hi everyone!

Halloween crept up fast, and I didn’t even carve my pumpkin! I went trick or treating with one of my friends, and I dressed up as a cowgirl! What did you dress up as?

Fall has come, but I can feel winter transitioning in already. Trees have lost almost all their leaves, the air is chilly, and I heard that it’s supposed to snow next weekend!

Every year, my school has a costume parade where each class goes around showing off their costumes, while Halloween music is playing. I like seeing other people’s costumes, especially the Strong Start kid’s costumes. Strong Start is preschool program for toddles at my school. Parents always dress their kids up with the most creative and cute costumes!

My favourite candy at Halloween is probably the Swedish Fish or Fuzzy Peaches. I also like chocolate. I mean, who doesn’t? I always try to find what my teachers enjoy when I trick or treat, like in grade two, my teacher loved Aero chocolate bars, and she ended up getting more than half of my chocolate that year. Sometimes, though, I have no idea what kind of candy they’re talking about.

This year my class created Halloween safety skits. My group got the topic of neighbourhood safety, and we had to show what not to do, and what to do. We acted out kids getting invited into a stranger’s house, and kids getting into a stranger’s car for a ride home. Then Patricia the Halloween Fairy(a character my class created) waved her wand, we went back in time, and made better choices. We performed these skits in front of the whole school on Halloween.

What’s your favourite candy? What did you dress up as? Did you do anything special at your school for Halloween?

Happy Halloween and happy blogging!

Gabi
